Governor Parris N. Glendening named Sandra Long to the position of Deputy Secretary of the Maryland Department of Commerce, - second in command of Maryland's chief agency on commerce and industry. Her historical appointment marked the first for a woman or African-American to this post in America. As the number two deal-maker in the State, she has been applauded for her expertise in bringing public and private financing resources together, which helped create more than 100,000 jobs within her tenure and brought millions of capital investment to the State.
In her role as Deputy Secretary, she was also the Chief Operating Officer and led the Commerce Agency's:

Before being named Deputy Secretary, her strengths in Finance, Administration and Operations led to her previous appointment of Chief Financial Officer for the Maryland State Lottery(MSLA). At the Lottery, she received national recognition for leading a team of experts in the redesign of the 1.4 billion dollar accounting system. The conversion of the manual accounting structure to a fully integrated and automated state of the art system which became one of the largest in state government history.
